Why does Frederik Buechner say, “a fragrance in the air, a certain passage of a song, an old photograph falling out from the pages of a book, the sound of somebody’s voice in the hall . . . makes your heart leap and fills your eyes with tears?”  Because these things “trigger” your memory! The memory that is stored in your heart of hearts. This is more than mere memorization; the very things that give meaning to us are stored in the memory of our heart. That is why Moses said, “be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen, or let them slip from your heart as long as you live” (Deut. 4:9).

This memory of the heart is triggered by smells, sight and sounds. Thus Our Father has given us ways of “remembering.” I hope you daily remind your heart of those things by “remembering”, through the sacraments provided by the Lord.
