Matt. 5:3 ¶ Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

When Jesus says, “Blessed are the poor,” he is not simply speaking of those who have economic challenges. Christ is speaking to every human being. Each of us  are living in a weak and frail condition called humanity. Sickness and death reveal this reality. Very few people would consider themselves “Blessed” when they are living in the midst of human weakness.

We all want to do something for people who are in need. We want to give comfort to those who are grieving or suffering. We want to help those in need and there is truly nothing wrong with this desire. It is very honorable and commendable. However, we must realize that each of us are in need of God’s blessing. We must recognize that He has and is coming to us. Sometimes we miss who is really receiving the blessing.

Contained within every opportunity to help is the blessing that we ourselves need. It is in the giving that we truly are receiving the blessing of God. It is us that receive the “blessing” from those to whom we give care. Blessed are the poor… that is you and me as we try to help those whom we see in need.
